SHANGHAI is on course to overtake Singapore to become the busiest container port in the world in 2008 as the business of Yangshan port expands, Xinhua reports.
The establishment of Yangshan port plays a key role in Shanghai's strategy on becoming an international shipping centre as it broke Shanghai's bottleneck without deep-water coastline and berths, the report said.
Yangshan port handled the first vessel in December 2005 and by May 2006, voyages that have called Yangshan reached 1,000. The number rose to 5,000 by September 2007 and to 8,000 by April this year, the report said.
Yangshan port, the main work of Shanghai International Shipping Centre, is becoming busier and busier and its hub port position is sticking out. The first phase project of Yangshan was inaugurated in December 2005 and the second phase in December 2006.
Shanghai surpassed Hong Kong to be the world's second largest container port in 2007 by handling 26 million TEU.
