Suez Canal hikes transit fees

The Suez Canal Authority said on Sunday it would raise its transit fees in 2008 by between 4.2% and 14.7%, with an average of 7.1%, taking effect in April.

Chairman Ahmed Ali Fadel told a news conference the increases reflect forecasts of a continuing global economic boom, especially in China and India.

Suez Canal raised its transit fees in April 2007 by between 1.41% and 3.73%, with an average of 2.84%, pushing its revenues to record highs.
