Singapore test scans US-bound boxes for nuclear, radiological content

2007-12-23

US-BOUND containers will be scanned in Singapore before boarding vessels in a six-month trial from May after scanning equipment has been installed at the Singapore's Brani Terminal.

The Secure Freight Initiative project was signed by Transport Secretary Choi Sing Kwok and US ambassador to Singapore Patricia Herbold.

Said Mr Choi: "Container security and the larger security of the global supply chain are areas of concern."

Said Ms Herbold: "This trial project is an important step toward a possible trade model that secures the global supply chain."

Singapore will be the seventh trial port to provide the US with data to assess the viability and effectiveness of implementing 100 per cent scanning of US-bound containers under the programme. Trial data will be transmitted to a US national targeting centre to determine the presence of radioactive material.

The first port was Puerto Cortes, Honduras in April followed by Southampton, then Salalah, Oman; Qasim, Pakistan and then Busan and Hong Kong.
