SITL Asia 2007 in Shanghai--Interview with Sergey Panachuk, Chief Representative of Eurosib

2007-12-21

Eurosib is one of the largest Russian transportation groups providing a door-to-door containerized shipment service. The company also solves complex logistical problems for cargo owners. They own a fleet of over 10 thousand railway wagons and over 12 thousand TEU containers. The company was established in the early 1990's and now has representative offices in China, Europe and the Middle East, and has a network of agents across South East Asia.

Eurosib established their first office in China 5 years ago, which is located in Beijing, and they have just opened another in Shanghai. They are also planning to open another office in Guang Zhou due to the large industry there and the amount of cargo that needs to be transported to and from the city. Mr Panachuk believes that the volume of containers that need to be transported between Russia and China is going to increase dramatically, but he admits that currently there is a bottleneck between the two countries. Russia and China share extensive land boarders, but rivers like the Ussuri River, separate large parts of these boarders, meaning that transportation by rail between the two countries is limited by the number of bridges. When considering alternative routes between China and Russia, including passage through Mongolia or Kazakhstan, similar bottlenecks are encountered caused by other rivers or mountainous regions.

Mr Panachuk believes that the difference between Eurosib and other Russian companies providing similar railway supported services like the company STS, is that his company provides better support for their customers, faster transportation and more reliable services. He predicts that the number of containers being transported by his company between Russia and China will continue to increase at a rate of around 15 percent each year.
