Abbas Stresses Palestinian Rights in Peace Initiative
POSTED: 10:12 a.m. EDT, March 31,2007

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Thursday stressed the Palestinian rights in the Arab peace initiative adopted by the Beirut Arab summit in 2002 and agreed to be revived by the current summit.

Abbas, who was in Riyadh attending the two-day 19th Arab summit meeting, made the remarks while addressing the closing session of the Riyadh summit.

The Arab initiative has stressed the importance of the Israeli withdrawal from all Palestinian and Arab territories and the right of the Palestinians to obtain their national and legitimate rights including the establishment of an independent Palestinian state and the settlement of Palestinian refugees, Abbas said.

The Palestinian leader hoped a newly-formed Arab committee under the chairmanship of Saudi Arabia would follow up the implementation of the Arab initiative in cooperation with concerned parties.

The initiative has made clear to entire world the Palestinian and Arab stance vis-a-vis the issue of peace, he stressed.

Meanwhile, Abbas expressed appreciation for the great attention given by Saudi Arabia and other Arab states to the Palestinian issue, especially the Saudi efforts to ensure the success of the Mecca talks between two mainstream Palestinian movements of Fatah and Hamas, which led to the formation of the Palestinian national unity government.

While stressing the importance of avoiding violence in the Palestinian territories, Abbas promised that "we are committed to all agreements and conventions we have signed."

The Palestinians were victims of violence, he said, while calling for Israeli efforts to reach a just and balanced solution to the conflict between the two sides.

While addressing the opening session of the 19th Arab summit on Wednesday, Arab League (AL) Secretary General Amr Moussa announced that "the Arabs have prepared themselves to start a peace process to end the Arab-Israeli conflict."

Arab leaders agreed to reactivate a Saudi-proposed Arab peace initiative without any modification during a closed-door session on Wednesday, Saudi media reported quoting a well-informed AL official source.

The Arab peace initiative, proposed by Saudi Arabia, calls for Israel's pullout from Arab land occupied in the 1967 Middle East war and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state in return for the normalization of ties with Arab states.
