Foreign carmakers, such as BMW, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz, sold 1,753 large vehicles sized 3,000 cc or more in South Korea in February, reaching an all-time high on a monthly basis, the Korea Times reported on Wednesday.
The sales of mid-sized foreign cars with an engine capacity of between 1,500 cc and 3,000 cc fell to 1,588 units last month from 1,612 units posted a year earlier, the report said..
Automobile dealers estimate imported cars hold a market share of about 25 percent in the sales of domestic and foreign automobiles with an engine capacity of 3.0 liters (3,000 cc) or above.
The Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association (KAIDA) has found that more than one or two in 10 imported cars were models with engine capacities exceeding 4.0 liters.
In South Korea, prices of domestic big sedans remain between 30 million won and 90 million won (about 32,000-96,000 U.S. dollars), while some BMW 7 Series, Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Audi A8 are priced at over 250 million won (266,000 U.S. dollars).
