Vietnam lowers tariffs on electrical, mechanical components
POSTED: 1:35 p.m. EDT, January 16,2007

Vietnam has recently reduced import taxes on 30 groups of mechanical and electrical components after the country abandoned its incentives for locally-made products in accordance with its commitments to entering the World Trade Organization.

Under a recent decision of the Finance Ministry, the groups, including plastic pipe, vacuum pump, ventilator and diesel engine components, are subject to new tax rates of between zero and 10 percent, down from previous 5-10 percent, local newspaper Vietnam News reported Tuesday.

Such items as components of electric fans having capacity of under 125 kw, ceiling fans, vacuum cleaners, floor polishers and juicers are to see their tax rates drop to 40 percent from 50 percent.

Besides the tariff reduction, the ministry has decided to apply import quotas for some goods, including poultry eggs, sugarcane, sugar beets, sucrose, unprocessed tobacco and salt, the newspaper said.
