The Singapore government on Monday launched new licences framework for Internet Protocol television (IPTV).
The Media Development Authority (MDA) said in a statement that it offers two types of licences for IPTV service providers who want to enter mass and niche markets.
One called nationwide subscription license will be awarded to the operators that have over 100,000 subscribers, similar to that for a mass market pay TV operator.
SingNet, Singapore's Internet service provider, has been awarded a nationwide license to roll out commercial IPTV services.
The other one called niche subscription license is for companies targeting niche markets of fewer than 100,000 subscribers. Niche licensees will not be required to carry local free-to-air channels.
The MDA said it wants to further encourage businesses to enter Singapore's IPTV services market.
IPTV uses the IP network and communication protocols to deliver television programs to viewers via a broadband connection and a set-top box connected to their television.
A key feature of IPTV is its interactivity. IPTV networks allow for two-way communication between the service provider and the viewer.
