Taliban releases Kidnapped Frenchman in Afghanistan
POSTED: 9:53 a.m. EDT, May 12,2007

The Taliban released a male French aid worker, who was kidnapped over one month ago, in Kandahar province of southern Afghanistan on Friday, a Taliban spokesman said.

The French man, who is identified as Eric, was handed over to tribal elders in Marwand district at around 5:30 p.m. (1300 GMT), the spokesman Yousuf Ahmadi told Xinhua by satellite phone from an undisclosed place.

The man was released as a "good gesture" toward the French people, Ahmadi said, adding no Taliban prisoners were released by Afghan authorities as exchange.

Taliban militants kidnapped two French aid workers including a lady and Eric and their three Afghan staff in the southern Nimroz province on April 3.

They were working for Terre d'enfance (Children's Land), an organization assisting children. The lady named Celine was freed on April 28.

Ahmadi did not make any comment on the condition of the three kidnapped Afghans.

The Taliban kidnapped a five-member Afghan medical team in Kandahar province on March 27, and has insisted that it would only release them after several Taliban prisoners are freed by the authorities.
