Korean Air, South Korea's flagship airline, has launched a dedicated freighter weekly service for Nova Scotia live lobsters from Halifax Stanfield International Airport to Incheon in a transit under 14 hours.
The flights will depart Incheon at 0250 hrs, with a fuel stop in Anchorage and arrive in Halifax's Gateway Facilities ULC at 1245 hrs. The service will finish at the end of August.
Demand for fresh Atlantic Canadian lobster already accounts for C$21 million (US$19.3 million) in exports to South Korea annually and is expected to increase following the Canada-South Korea Free Trade Agreement.
Korean Air service is forecast to lift a minimum of 40,000 kilogrammes of live lobster at estimated export value for the province of C$580,000, reported the Halifax Chronicle Herald.
The service launch by South Korea's largest airline will boost links into Asia and provide a critical link to the huge markets of China and Hong Kong, said Lobster Council of Canada's Geoff Irvine.
"We're operating in a competitive global marketplace, and the entire industry can benefit if we differentiate ourselves as a recognisable brand," he added, already supported by an initiative to promote Canadian lobster, according to Shipping Gazette.
