The carrier transported 1.7 million tonnes of cargo and mail, tonnage almost equal to the previous year, it adds.Global demand for airfreight was muted in the past financial year, continuing the trend that was set during 2012, it says. However, Lufthansa Cargo continued its, "highly flexible and demand-oriented capacity management in this challenging environment," which helped boost load factors and kept the German carrier as one of the few profitable cargo airlines. Despite the tough market conditions, Lufthansa was able to make some additions to its route network including, Guadalajara in Mexico and the Peruvian capital Lima. Lufthansa Cargo's chief executive officer, Karl Ulrich Garnadt, says: "Lufthansa Cargo remains on course. We are able to hold our own even in a difficult market environment and have laid the basis in 2013 for important developments in our company. If the welcome trends of recent weeks in global air cargo markets, particularly in Asia, continue then we can feel optimistic about the new year." Lufthansa took delivery of two Boeing 777 Freighters in November 2013. The company is also revamping its IT system.
