Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, which serves India’s most populous city Mumbai, will have its new Terminal 2 inaugurated 10 January.
Prime minister of India, Manmohan Singh, will attend the inauguration event for the Rs 12,500-crore (£1.2bn) Terminal 2, which is due to become operational within the next few weeks.
The new terminal features a larger check-in area, more immigration and security counters and a larger retail space.
Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), the terminal includes a peacock-inspired interior and lotus-shaped chandeliers. Art installations from local artists have also been installed to illustrate India's cultural and creative industries.
Created as a cross-shaped building to facilitate the quick and organised movement of planes and passengers, the new terminal has been fitted with glass walls and multi-level light wells to provide ample natural light.
The new 439,000m² building will increase passenger capacity at Chhatrapati Shivaji by around one third to 40 million passengers per year. A multi-level car park, new taxiways and apron areas for aircraft parking have also been constructed to facilitate passenger growth.
The project was financed by Indian conglomerate GVK that won the rights to run the airport in 2006, according to PassengerTerminalToday.com.
