Welsh state-run Cardiff Airport is to increase its charter programme as its existing carrier Air Malta expands services, its sixth national airline to increase flight frequencies as of April 8, 2014, according to the Shipping Gazette.
Since the Welsh government bought back the airport from Spanish infrastructure group Albertis for GBP52 million (US$85.4 million) in March 2013, services and frequencies have increased.
The national airline of Malta plans to increase the number of departures by four for its summer 2014 charter season to run from the Easter period until end of peak season on October 21.
Cardiff Airport chief executive Jon Horne said the expansion cements the strong historic links between the southern European country in the Mediterranean Sea and Wales, a country bordered by the Irish Sea and the Atlantic Ocean to the west.
The airline's "numbers last month showed a 17 per cent year on year increase - this all adds to the growth of the airport," he added, cited a report from Middlesex, UK-based Routes News.
