Freighter panel falls on Miami mall

2010-2-9

A 5.5m, 68kg panel fell from an Atlas Air 747 freighter on Friday landing in a Miami shopping mall's car park.

In a statement, the carrier said: "Atlas Air confirms that a fibreglass fairing from one of its freighter aircraft, registration number N429MC, dislodged from the aircraft upon approach into Miami International Airport. The flight was en route from Santiago (Chile) to Miami. The fairing came to rest in a parking lot of a nearby shopping mall. The plane landed safely at [Miami Airport] and we understand no one was injured and that there was no property damage."

'Atlas is grateful that no one was injured and is investigating the matter further. [It] is also cooperating with the appropriate authorities in their review of this matter. Atlas takes this matter very seriously and will be conducting a thorough investigation," it added.
