American sees gain in Q3 unit revenue

2008-9-19

American Airlines parent AMR said on Thursday its third quarter mainline unit revenue is expected to rise between 9.5 percent and 10.5 percent compared with the year-ago period.

The company said in a government filing it expects to end the quarter with USD$4.9 billion in cash and short-term investments.

The airline industry, battered severely by high fuel costs, is in the midst of a massive downsizing and cost-cutting effort.

AMR plans to cut domestic capacity by up to 12 percent in the fourth quarter.

AMR said it has hedged about 39 percent of its expected third quarter fuel consumption at an average price cap of USD$3.11 per gallon. Jet fuel traded near $3.54 a gallon on Thursday.
