Strike hits Guernsey airport

2008-7-22

Staff at Guernsey Airport, harbour and cleaners and porters at the island's hospital have walked out in an unofficial strike today. The action by about 1000 public service workers follows the collapse of pay talks.

Guernsey Airport closed for an hour at 06:00 yesterday after fire-fighters refused to provide cover. The workers want a 7.9% pay rise, but the Public Services Remuneration Committee (PSRC), which is responsible for pay negotiations in the States, has stuck to its offer of 3%.

The unofficial strike action is a reaction to the PSRC calling in an industrial disputes officer to oversee talks in an attempt to speed up a resolution. The unions say that they were not asked about bringing a third party into the talks.
