HIAL firefighters strike called off

2008-6-5

Airport operator Hightlands and Islands Airports Limited (HIAL) have said the planned strike by airport firefighters next week has now been suspended. Further talks will take place between the company and the Unite trade union. However, industrial action is still proposed for July 4.

The industrial action was planned after the union rejected the company's 2007/08 pay award of 2%. They were to stage walkouts on June 9 and July 4.

However, a spokesman for HIAL, which operates 10 airports including Inverness, said: 'The union has agreed to suspend the action planned for 9 June to allow further discussions to take place. We welcome this move which will allow air traffic to operate as normal next Monday. We are now liaising with the union to identify suitable dates to get round the table again.'
