Vietnam's government plans to quadruple its overall airport capacity in 12 years.

The government is planning to increase airport capacity by 2.5 within seven years and by four in 2020.

Investment in airport infrastructure up to 2015 is expected to be US$2.84 billion and airport development about US$2.73 billion. This investment will be for building, upgrades and expansion of 10 international and a further 14 domestic airports.

Meanwhile, Vietnam Airlines general director Pham Ngoc Minh says the company plans to invest further in its fleet to become one of the largest in the region. The current fleet includes 44 modern aircraft.

The purchasing plan has been implemented over recent years with a plan to increase the fleet capacity to 86 by 2015 and 110 in 2020.

In 2005, Vietnam Airlines confirmed a contract with Boeing for four Dreamliners 787-8 which are due to be delivered in 2009 and 2010.

Airbus also inked two contracts worth US$3.5 billion for 10 Airbus A350-9900s and 20 Airbus A321-200 with delivery to start in 2012.
