HIAL firefighters to strike

2008-6-2

Air passengers could face disruption after firefighters at a number of Scotland's smaller airports announced plans to strike over pay. Highlands and Islands Airports Limited (HIAL) said today that it was formally notified by Unite the union will call its members out on two 24-hour strikes.

The industrial action comes after the union rejected the company's 2007/08 pay award of 2%. They plan to stage walkouts on June 9 and July 4.

HIAL operates 10 airports in the north and west and also Dundee Airport. Most of Unite's members at HIAL are non-managerial staff at the Airport Fire Service (AFS) which provides mandatory rescue and firefighting cover at its airports.

A HIAL spokesman said it had offered the union further talks and it was hoped a strike could be avoided.
