Jet2 face probe over 'fuel supplement'

2008-6-17

Leeds Bradford Airport based budget airline Jet2 is the subject of a probe after a newspaper raised concerns about extra costs it adds on to ticket prices, the Sunday Sun reports. The newspaper reports that Jet2 passengers have to pay a 'fuel supplement', which is not revealed on its advertised rate. It is only when customers buy their tickets online the extra cost is revealed.

The charge is being applied 12 months after the Office of Fair Trading told budget airlines to include all non-optional extras in their headline fares. The OFT told the newspaper that it has raised concerns with Jet2 after receiving a number of consumer complaints.

An OFT Spokesman told the newspaper: 'We have concerns about the way prices are currently displayed on Jet2's website, and we are currently considering the issues about the fuel supplement. We have taken certain matters up with Jet2 but we cannot provide any further details at this stage.'

'The OFT is committed to ensure that consumers are not misled by advertised prices that bear little relation to actual prices. Misleading pricing not only undermines consumer confidence but also distorts competition, and we will enforce the law enthusiastically where we find that consumers have been misled.'

Jet2 refused to comment when the Sunday Sun contacted them.
