Southend Airport could learn from the the success of Southampton Airport, which now has more than 1.9m passengers a year, its managing director says. Alistair Welch spoke of his hopes for expansions in a talk to councillors and VIPs at the Southend Airshow.
He stopped short of naming the airport's likely buyer, explaining this would only be announced once the deal was finalised at the end of June. The airport is reported to have a £50million price tag.
Mr Welch said: 'Southampton is a thriving regional airport that has won awards for its frequency and service. It's also a real asset to the local community. If there was a template we were trying to follow it would be Southampton. It has about 2 million passengers a year, which is a very different proposition to a major airport like Stansted. That level would be our aspiration.' |
