Southwest Airlines said on Wednesday its board elected chief executive Gary Kelly as chairman.
The airline said Kelly will also assume the title of president when Colleen Barrett's employment contract expires on July 15.
As chairman, Kelly succeeds Herb Kelleher, a founder of Southwest, who had served as executive chairman since 1978.
Both Kelleher and Barrett will remain full-time Southwest Airlines employees until July 2013.
