Ryanair Says Will Not Pay Higher BAA Charge

2008-4-16

Irish carrier Ryanair said it had written to airport operator BAA objecting to a proposed increase in charges at Stansted Airport and that it would withhold payment if it does not get a satisfactory response.

"Ryanair is still awaiting a response to its letter to the management of the BAA airport monopoly, but if BAA Stansted continues to abuse its monopoly power by imposing these maximum allowed price increases, then Ryanair will launch judicial review proceedings and it will withhold these latest increases (putting them in an escrow account) until the outcome of its judicial review proceedings at Stansted," it said in a statement.

Earlier on Tuesday, fellow low-cost airline easyJet said it would withhold part-payment of recent price rises by BAA, owned by Spanish firm Ferrovial, at Gatwick Airport until the outcome of its legal challenge to the increases was known.
