Lufthansa Cargo granted overflight rights, after moving hub to Siberia

2008-3-31

LUFTHANSA Cargo has confirmed that talks have been held between the governments of Germany and Russia regarding the carrier's overflight rights.

As a result, German carrier has been granted the overflight rights until the end of this year's summer schedule, reports dars.ru, the Russian Transport Daily.

This settles a dispute that had temporarily banned Lufthansa Cargo from Russian airspace. This prompted speculation that Russia was acting to force the airline to shift its hub from Astana in Kazakhstan to Krasnoyarsk in Siberia. However, the report said that both sides have denied claims that the two issues are connected.

On the other hand, Lufthansa Cargo has agreed to now move to Krasnoyarsk on the proviso that commercial and operational requirements are met five months after Krasnoyarsk Airport successfully implemented CAT II measures.

The report added that negotiations between both governments will be resumed in September 2008.
