A RECENT emergency meeting of the Tel Aviv Chamber of Commerce called on Israel's Ministry of Transport to accept responsibility for the expected fiasco resulting from deregulating ground handling at national airports.
Port2Port, Israel's trade website, reported that representatives of the airline industry, cargo terminals and freight forwarders, as well as the heads of customs and business development at the Israel Airport Authority urged the Transport Ministry to co-ordinate meetings among the stakeholders and set out rules for coming era.
Customs broker Amir Shani, also chairman of the chamber's ways and means committee. expressed frustration over the lack of government leadership in creating rules for the new era of competition among the three air cargo terminals.
Mr Shani expected costs would go up rather than down owing to the uncertainties surrounding export and import procedures under the new arrangement, which is set to come into effect in three months.
