2008-1-30

LUFTHANSA Cargo has established a third joint venture in China to handle cargo at Tianjin airport, making this its third such operations, after helping to establish similar companies in Shanghai and Shenzhen.

Lufthansa Cargo now holds 46 per cent in the Tianjin Airport Hua Yu Air Cargo Terminal Co Ltd (HYACT) while Taiwan's Hwa-Hsia International Holding (HHIH) has 49 per cent and Tianjin Airport International Logistics Joint Stock Company (TAIL) holds five per cent.

"Tianjin will develop into the most important airfreight hub in north China within the next few years,"" said Lufthansa Cargo chairman Carsten Spohr.

The operation's 90,000-square-metre freight centre at Tianjin airport is scheduled to start in the spring. The high-tech facility is designed to handle 360,000 tons annually and can be expanded another 140,000 square metres.

The company release noted that up until now, the "international airfreight of the region was mostly handled at Beijing International Airport, which, however, is reaching its capacity. With the start of the Olympics, it is planned to shift the handling of freighters to Tianjin."

Management of the new air cargo handling joint venture in Tianjin will be in the hands of Ulrich Huesson. He was previously senior manager of customer relations and operations at the International Cargo Centre Shenzhen (ICCS), a statement from Lufthansa Cargo said.
