Lufthansa to acquire Poland's LOT

2008-1-25

Germany's leading airline Lufthansa is interested in acquiring a 51 percent stake in Poland's national airline LOT.

The State Treasury may well gain from US$126 million to $293 million on the deal, possibly $73 million $126 million more if it decides to sell its entire 67 percent stake.

Swissair's receiver, owner of 25.1 percent of LOT shares, is another potential beneficiary, as well as LOT employees, who control 6.9 percent. Lufthansa has only named two conditions - the total acceptance of the ministry and the sale of at least 51 percent of LOT shares.

Ministry officials said LOT will surely not be sold to any state-owned company.
