AIR New Zealand has applied to Chinese aviation authorities to launch a direct service between Auckland and Beijing from July 18, shortly before the opening of the Beijing Olympic Games, Logistics Week reported.
Air New Zealand CEO Rob Fyfe said the new service would provide two flights a week using Boeing 777-200ER aircraft with flights taking 14 hours.
Mr Fyfe said the number of New Zealand tourist going to China is growing at 14 per cent a year. China's booming economy and the Beijing Olympics is expected to bring great business opportunities for Air New Zealand as well as the New Zealand tourist industry.
Air New Zealand has been operating a direct service from Auckland to Shanghai since November 2006.
