Continental, United praise Peters leadership in delay-cutting strategy

2007-12-23

THE US Department of Transportation (DOT) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced its plan to reduce delays and congestion at the three major New York-New Jersey commercial airports.

The two largest American airlines, Continental Airlines and United Airlines, praised the work of Transportation Secretary Mary Peters for concentrating on the long overdue issues of schedule reduction and time delays.

Continental welcomed the focus on lateral navigation approach (RNAV) procedures, reduced spacing on final approach and optimisation of arrivals. Continental CEO Larry Kellner said: "Secretary Peters has demonstrated her leadership in taking on an issue of delays in the northeast that has been languishing in recent years."

UA's chief executive Glenn Tilton added: "We support the schedule reduction as a short-term fix to reduce delays and we continue to believe the long-term solution lies in providing adequate funding and commitment for a modernised air traffic control system."

Further steps for airlines will be the employment of a senior coordinator to focus on delays and utilise military airspace off the east coast and the tough decision to cap JFK and Liberty airports to improve operations next summer.
