South Korea pushes for $1b UAE jet deal

2007-11-1

Abu Dhabi: South Korea's commerce and industry minister Kim Young-ju is heading a business delegation to the UAE to promote a bid to supply about 40 training jets worth $1 billion.

The minister's visit comes amid widespread expectations that the UAE will choose its next generation trainer aircraft early this month.

Korea's T-50 Golden Eagle is competing against Italy's Aermacchi M-346. BAE Systems' Hawk 128 was previously in the reckoning, but a report said the company had been drop-ped from the tender.

If Korea wins the contract, it will be the first foreign sale of a South Korean jet trainer, opening doors for more sales to other countries.
