New food court opens at Manchester Airport terminal 1

2007-10-31

Soap opera Coronation Street's latest tycoon opened the first phase of Manchester Airport's £35m redevelopment last week Jane Danson, whose character Leanne Battersby runs a pizza restaurant, cut the ribbon at the new £10m mezzanine food and bar area at terminal 1.

The new dining area includes a self-serve food court with a difference. The Real Food Company provide food from across the region including Lancashire Hotpot and Manchester tart - all made on the premises. Passengers can also enjoy a preflight pint at Bar MCR or a sit-down meal at a Giraffe Restaurant, while taking in panoramic views of the runway.

Andrew Harrison, commercial director of retail at the airport, said: 'It's a very important part of our redevelopment and the future of the airport. These are great restaurants and bars with amazing views over the airfield and we are very pleased to be opening it up to passengers.'

When the terminal redevelopment is completed in summer 2009, the airport's busiest terminal will have a new look aimed at relieving the stress of going on holiday. The whole security process will be moved forward to behind check-in. After being screened passengers will then be free to explore restaurants and bars without worrying about further checks.

The new outbound control area is scheduled to open next spring. And the new duty free store and shopping mall is scheduled for 2009.
